Depression

Depression is increasingly common in our young people. It is characterised by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities. It can disturb sleep and appetite, cause tiredness and poor concentration and a feeling of helplessness.

The causes of depression include complex interactions between social, psychological and biological factors. Life events such as childhood adversity, loss may contribute or catalyse the development of depression.

Movement can lift our mood and reconnect us to our body. Breathing exercises can help shift some of the heaviness that young people might feel and lift their spirits and provide some perspective. By moving the body and connecting the breath we can connect to the emotions that feel stuck, developing a healthier more positive relationship with ourselves, finding more joy and connection.
